Trincomalee is known as a port city on the north-east coast of Sri Lanka, and Trincomalee (Trinco) sits on one of the world's finest natural harbors. Fort Frederick was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century. In Trincoamalee, the grand Koneswaram Temple stands on the Swami Rock cliff, a popular vantage point for blue whale watching. The holy complex of Koneshwaram temple contains ornate shrines and a massive statue of Shiva. Trincomalee's superb deep-water port has made it the target of all manner of attacks over the centuries.
 
The best season to visit Trincomalee is from March to June.
