Horton Plains

Horton Plains National Park is located 63 Kilometers from Hatton and in Central highlands of Central province of Sri Lanka. Even though it is little bit off from the other tour sites, visiting the park makes you the drive worthwhile. Horton Plains is designated as a National park in 1988 and also it was declared as an UNESCO World heritage site in 2010.

Since it is a largely flat land, hiking the park is somewhat easy. The trail is about 9.5 kilometers loop and you will come across the park’s two main attractions. At the middle of the trail you will find the World’s End and Baker’s fall. World’s End is a cliff top which stretches out far beyond the surrounding plains and on a clear day, you can even see the shore. Yala National Park

Ruhunu national park or we all known name Yala National park is located in the south eastern region of Sri Lanka. It spreads over two provinces, as Monaragala district in Uva province and Hambantota district in Southern province. Yala is the second largest national park in Sri Lanka. In 1990, Yala has nominated as a wild sanctuary and again in 1938 it is nominated as a national park in Sri Lanka. Yala national park is in the main city Tissamaharama. There are many other places to visit in Tissamaharama, but most famous and most visited place is Yala national park. This Yala national park is consists of five main blocks. They are naming in different names like Ruhunu national park, Kumana national park. These two are open to the public and other 3 are not. However you need at least 3-4 hours to cover these two areas. Especially you can see leopards in these two blocks.

In here not as the other parks, you have to take a safari jeep for the ride. The national park provides the jeeps with soft-tops which gives the opportunity to view the wild life. There are best timing for the jeep safaris, normally morning safaris start around 5.30 am and will continue for 3-4 hours and afternoon safaris start around 2.30 pm same as continue for 3-4 hours. These timings due to the habitat of the wild animals, mostly they are going to the seen places in early morning hours and afternoon hours for baths, eating, drinking water, etc… And also there are full day safaris. It means the ride will starts around 9 am and finishes afternoon 4 or 5 pm. In there you will be providing by the lunch in the forest where safety and some snack in-between. Pigeon Island

Pigeon island National park is one of the two marine national parks in Sri Lanka. Pigeon Island is situated 1 Km off he coast of Nilaveli in Eastern Province. Pigeon Island consists with two islands, as small pigeon island and large pigeon island. The large pigeon island is surrounded by a coral reef and small pigeon island is surrounded by rocky islets. In 1963 pigeon island is designated as a sanctuary and in 2003 it was re-designated as a National Park in Sri Lanka. This pigeon island contains some of the best remaining coral reefs in Sri Lanka. This is one of the protected areas affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle and 93.4 km from the capital Colombo in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department. It has a  25 acre coconut property adjoining the Maha Oya River. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungles of Sri Lanka and in 1978 the orphanage was taken over by the National Zoological Gardens from the Department of wildlife. In 1982, a captive breeding program was launched since that over 20 elephants has been bred here. The ultimate aim of the orphanage is to simulate a natural habitat to these elephants. The number of elephants living in Sri Lankan wilderness exceeds 3000.

However, the Pinnawala elephant Orphanage is opens to the public to see and enjoy the day life style of elephants and to get love from the people. Elephants are taken to the river twice a day for a bath, and all the babies less than three years of age are still bottle fed by the mahouts and volunteers. You cannot visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in any time. There a time schedule for visiting, feeding to elephants, river bathing, etc… Selected visitors have a chance of bottle feeding milk to the baby elephants.

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu is located 180 Kilometers north to the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo with native wild life within their habitats. Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe is located 180 Km from Colombo in south- central sector and situated just south of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. Udawalawe National park is the sixth largest animal sanctuary of Sri Lanka. Udawalawe national park lies around the Udwalawe reservoir, which provides water for agriculture and hydro power generation spreads over an area 30,821. So in 1972 Udawalawe National Park established with the objective of protecting the catchment area of Udawalawe reservoir.

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National park is a wild sanctuary which is located in the North Central province of Sri Lanka. Minneriya forest is originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938, the after Minneriya wildlife sanctuary is designated as a national park in 1997. Than the other national parks in Sri Lanka you can find a large number of Sri Lankan Elephants gathering around to grass fields. You can find large gathering during the dry season to drink water from inside water bodies. Normally we recommend you to visit Minneriya national park during May to October. That period is the normal sunny season in Sri Lanka. In rainy seasons they won’t come outside from the forest and cannot see in that period. There is an elephant corridor in between the Minneriya national park, Kaudulla Park and Wasgamuwa Park, so elephants are roaming among these three national parks time to time. Other than elephants there are two endemic monkeys of Sri Lanka, large herbivorous mammals such as Sri Lankan samba deer and Sri Lankan axis deer, rare and endangered species such as Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear, the gray slender Loris and many kinds of birds.
